Regional food taster event serves up a weekend of treats
A festive fine food weekend is poised to serve up a mouth-watering
menu of entertainment, including celebrity fun, delicious food
tasting and the chance to see exciting countryside pursuits..
Award-winning food and drink distribution group Farmshop Home
Delivery will be throwing open its doors to visitors for the
first time on November 22nd and 23rd. The firm, which is the
current NFU Countryside Small Business of the Year and a finalist
in the BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards, is offering foodie
fans from across the East Midlands the chance to discover more
about the wonderful array of food and drink that's produced
on our doorsteps.
Nottingham Forest manager Paul Hart will be joining in the fun
by donning a pinny and taking part in a Ready, Steady, Cook
type event on the Sunday to help raise money for Rutland House
School, Nottingham - one of Scope's national training centres
and a charity supported by the football club. During the weekend
there'll also be the chance to see Britain's only Asian sheep
dog triallist Nij Vyas, from Wigston, Leicestershire, in action.
President of the British Sprout Growers' Association Roger Welberry,
from Lincolnshire, will be promoting the versatility of this
healthy, but much maligned, vegetable with mascot Welly.
Some of the 40 producers who supply their food and drink to
customers in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire through Farmshop
Home Delivery will also be attending the event to offer samples
and taster sessions in a bid to raise awareness about regional
food production. There'll be ideas for the Christmas menu, winter
warmer meal solutions, gift suggestions for food lovers, an
environment farm walk, and the chance to see rare breed animals.
"We've been running Farmshop Home Delivery for more than
three years now and decided it was time that we gave our local
community the chance to find out more about what we do and the
producers who supply such great food," explains managing
director David Rose. "We've lined up two good days out
for all the family, and hope to raise a bit of money for charity
as well."
The Festive Open Weekend of Fine Food & Drink kicks off
at Farmshop's HQ at Shackerdale Farm, near Car Colston, Bingham,
each day at 9.30am and runs until 5pm on the Saturday and 4pm
on the Sunday. The event will be signed off the A46 and from
Screveton village, and admission is free.
Among the events taking place over the weekend are cooking demonstrations
by members of Ladies in Pigs - an organisation that promotes
British pork products - plus the chance to taste the recently-invented
Nottinghamshire sausage, created by Ollerton butcher Mike Maloney.
Award-winning Nottinghamshire school meals cook and food consultant
Jeanette Orrey, who runs Primary Choice, will be talking about
healthy school meals and local sourcing. There will also be
displays by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and
green group Eco-Teams.
"More and more people are realising the importance of the
quality of the food that we eat and its origins," adds
David Rose. "This is a great chance for people to find
out about the responsible food production that's going on in
our region, and ways that they can access it. We hope they'll
enjoy a great day out too."
